Abstract

The history of Turkish medicine in Anatolia began to develop from the beginning of the 11th century and was shaped by the influence of a mixture of western and eastern medical cultures. In today's modern Turkey more than 90 medical and 30 pharmacy schools provide undergraduate education. Independent toxicology departments are mainly located in the schools of pharmacy in Turkey, while some schools of medicine and schools of veterinary medicine include toxicology units within their pharmacology departments. The Turkish Society of Toxicology (TST) was established in 1987 as the pioneer and primary professional organization for all toxicology-related science in Turkey. TST became a member of the Federation of European Toxicologists and European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX) in 1989 and the International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX) in 1998. Numerous successful international organizations and conferences held by the society, together with scientific collaborations, have enabled Turkish researchers to take roles in executive positions of IUTOX and EUROTOX. TST is also the national registry authority for the European Registered Toxicologist. This chapter provides information about the development of medicine in Turkey, toxicology education programs, and some Turkish resources regarding toxicological sciences.
