Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides a detailed discussion of the interactions of electromagnetic X-ray waves with matter and the X-ray optics of refraction and reflection. The physical basis and derivation of the complex atomic scatter factor and complex refractive index for X-rays, which yield X-ray optical constants for X-ray optical elements, are presented. Also discussed in detail are X-ray interactions with matter and cross sections; namely, photoelectric absorption, Compton scatter, pair production, and Rayleigh scatter, as well as collision energy losses by energetic charged particles in matter, including bremsstrahlung X-rays.
