Abstract

Accounts are provided for all 36 species which occur in the ASCOBANS Agreement Area, with an emphasis on the 16 species with a regular presence, 12 of which are small cetaceans covered specifically by the Agreement. These include harbour porpoise, common bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin, short-beaked common dolphin, white-beaked dolphin, Atlantic white-sided dolphin, Risso’s dolphin, killer whale, long-finned pilot whale, Cuvier’s beaked whale, Sowerby’s beaked whale and northern bottlenose whale. Also considered in more detail, are the following species of large cetaceans: sperm whale, humpback whale, minke whale and fin whale. For each species, a description of their appearance is given, followed by a review of the population structure, range, distribution, abundance, status and ecology and the main conservation they face.
