Abstract

The genus Oryza is a small one, consisting of 18–24 species and taxa. It includes the two cultivated species, the Asian rice, Oryza sativa L. and the African rice, Oryza glaberrima Steud. The pantropical distribution of the Oryza taxa and species is given. The concept of a species complex, and the difficulties in delimiting species and taxa in the genus Oryza are discussed, along with a possible explanation. About 15 significant phylogenetic studies done in the genus Oryza using various molecular biology techniques are presented. No two studies gave similar results. The possible reasons for these variations are discussed.
