Abstract
A growing number of studies have investigated efficiency in the banking industry. In particular, most of this research focuses on the European and US banking sectors. This chapter will comprehensively review the literature investigating the efficiency in the banking industry, and it will be divided into international studies, single-country studies, as well as the efficiency studies focusing on the Chinese banking industry. Few research articles have examined the competitive condition in the Chinese banking sector. The second part of this chapter will review the studies evaluating competition in the Chinese banking industry as well as that from other countries around the world. The third part of this chapter will mainly focus on reviewing relevant literature on the impact of competition on efficiency in the banking industry. Finally, summary and conclusion will be provided.
