Abstract
Rabies, an acute, progressive, fatal encephalomyelitis, transmitted most commonly through the bite of a rabid animal, is responsible for more than 59,000 human deaths globally. Primarily due to the lack of sensitive and available laboratory diagnostic methods, the true impact on worldwide public health and disease burden due to rabies remains underestimated. Accurate and rapid diagnosis of rabies can help initiate prompt infection control and public health measures, remove or lessen the need for costly and unnecessary treatment/medical tests, initiate therapy, diagnose alternative diseases, and aid in proper administration of postexposure prophylaxis vaccination to family members and medical staff.
