Abstract

This chapter promotes an understanding of blockchain’s potential to address various challenges in the food and beverage industry supply chains. We provide details of IBM’s blockchain-based Food Trust, which is a widely used platform for food supply chains. It discusses cases of blockchain deployment in domestic and cross-border food supply chains. It also highlights the limitations to using blockchain systems in food and beverage supply chains in developing countries. It also gives an overview of the open blockchain platform OpenSC, which is being used to track food products by diverse companies such as the Swiss multinational food and beverage company Nestle and Australia’s integrated commercial fishing company Austral Fisheries.
