Abstract

This chapter discusses the laws of continuum mechanics to model the motion of blood on macroscopic length and time scales. The basics of continuum mechanics, conservation laws and resulting partial differential equations are described. Equations describing the dynamics of blood flows, the Navier–Stokes equations, and the set of equations used to model the motion of elastic vessels and soft tissues, i.e., the elasticity equations are explained in detail.
