Abstract

This chapter studies the genus Kuraishia. In the determination of asexual reproduction, budding is multilateral on a narrow base, and cells are spherical to ellipsoidal. Pseudohyphae and true hyphae are not produced. Colonies are smooth and tannish-white in color. In sexual reproduction it is seen that conjugation usually precedes ascus formation. Asci are deliquescent and form one to four hat-shaped ascospores. This study further examines the physiology, biochemistry, and phylogenetic placement. The type of species mentioned is Kuraishia capsulata. The species accepted are Kuraishia capsulata and Kuraishia molischiana. The systematic discussion of the species includes growth on 5% malt extract agar, growth on the surface of 5% malt extract, Dalmau plate culture on morphology agar, formation of ascospores, origin of the strains studied, authentic strain, systematics, ecology, biotechnology, agriculture and food, and clinical importance.
