Abstract

Anesthesia care for patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures in nonoperating room locations is on the rise. The remote locations and dissimilarities from the traditional operating room pose challenges to the anesthesia provider. Patients can vary greatly in terms of their medical complexity, but some are considered “too sick” for open surgical procedures. The anesthetic requirement can also vary depending on procedure-related and patient-related factors. This chapter addresses the challenges of delivering safe and effective anesthesia care in nonoperating room locations and the unique safety concerns of protecting patients and anesthesia providers from ionizing radiation and magnetic resonance. Anesthetic considerations and management of common out-of-operating room procedures—interventional radiology, gastrointestinal endoscopy, cardiac electrophysiology, catheter-based cardiac intervention, and electroconvulsive therapy—are discussed.
