Abstract

This chapter presents an effort to formulate a strategy for sustainable energy services in rural areas of Yemen. A special emphasis is paid to renewable energy sources (RES). The energy status of the country or the high potentials of RES are also examined. Further existing policies and services are investigated including the applications of RES. Finally, a rural energy services strategy is formulated. It is believed that the implementation of proposed strategy should lead to sustainable energy services development in the rural areas of Yemen. To formulate an applicable energy strategy for rural areas it is necessary to adopt the following principles as general guidance: (1) welfare improvement and (2) the use of RES. Yemen is considered as an oil and gas producer country. However, it is always possible to export oil or gas but it is not yet possible to export solar energy or other form of renewables. Therefore, the strategy should be based on the use of RES available in the country.
