Abstract
The threat from an insider is often overlooked and their potential impact is often significantly underestimated. An insider is someone with some degree of established trust and corresponding access to an organization's resources. This chapter works to define the insider threat, their motivations, impact of their actions, and methods of detection. Some examples and analysis of the insider threat are provided across various US government departments and other commercial organizations.
