Abstract

The scope of problems concerning genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and genetically modified food (GMF) is the subject of much controversy. There is a lack of comprehensive studies pertaining to the attitudes of adolescents toward GMOs and the conditioning of these attitudes. The objective of this study was recognition of the attitudes of Polish adolescents toward GMOs and GMF. The study was conducted by the method of a diagnostic survey using a standardized questionnaire in a sample of 1000 schoolchildren. The results of the study show that the level of interest in the scope of problems concerning GMOs among Polish adolescents remains on a relatively low level. The main source of knowledge about GMOs is the Internet. Polish adolescents' attitude toward the production of genetically modified plants/animals is relatively negative, which is manifested by low interest in the cultivation of GM plants and breeding GM animals on their own farms in the future. With respect to animal breeding, the schoolchildren are also skeptical about feeding animals with feed of GM plant origin. The respondents' gender and age exert a significant effect on the attitudes toward GMOs and GMF among Polish adolescents.
