Abstract

Mini hydro development represents a significant part of total hydro energy potential in Macedonia. Republic of Macedonia is one of the countries in Europe with the highest percentage of undeveloped hydro potential. As a result of different unfavorable economy and energy development factors in the past, the number of developed hydro power projects in the past 20-30 years is very small. This leads to very low value of hydro-thermal energy production coefficient. Lack of hydro energy production and Government energy policy has been a stimulated development for several independent energy production projects under construction. The basic technical and economic parameters of these projects are presented in this chapter. Economic parameters in many cases are favorable, especially in multipurpose projects. The Electric Power Company of Macedonia (ESM) has prepared a register of about 70 possible mini hydro power plants for which the preliminary studies, primary design or detailed design reports are done. Feasible projects have been selected and ranked based on these studies.
