Abstract

Recurrent miscarriage affects 1%–3% of reproductive-aged women. When following the current guidelines of respected societies, only about 45% of couples will be given a possible explanation for their losses afterward and extensive evaluation. The genetic evaluation of products of conception using 24-chromosome microarray analysis adds significantly to the evaluation of recurrent pregnancy loss recommended by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Genetic evaluation on miscarriage tissue should be offered to all couples with two or more consecutive pregnancy losses. The combination of a genetic evaluation on miscarriage tissue with an evidence-based evaluation for recurrent pregnancy loss will identify a probable or definitive cause in over 90% of miscarriages.
