Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to investigate human mating choices. Research on human mating choice suggests that some human mating behaviors are not culturally bound; in fact, they transcend geographical, racial, and economic boundaries. There are some worldwide trends in human mating behavior that seem to correspond to survival problems that we have faced in our evolutionary past. The following is an incomplete list: Men prefer to mate with younger women but women prefer to mate with older men; men are more interested in short-term mating than are women; men value physical attractiveness in a mate more than women do. Men may prefer younger women because they have a higher reproductive potential than older women, and women may prefer older men because they have more resources for offspring. Women generally prefer men with either good financial resources or high social standing (because a man's ability to provide resources for her offspring is positively related to his social status).
