Abstract

The photoreduction of the uranyl ion has been investigated in sulfuric acid with a CW He-Cd laser at 4416 å. The quantum yield of 0.69 ± 0.03 has been measured for the production of U(IV) at 25°C. The effects of the concentration of ethanol, sulfuric acid and uranyl ion on the quantum yield are discussed. For [C2H5OH]>0.5 M, [H2SO4] > 2.0 M and [U(VI)] > 7.0 x 10-3 M these concentration effects were negligible. The dependence of the reaction rate on the concentration of sulfuric acid and uranyl ion has been studied. The apparent rate of U(IV) production is a function of the concentration of H+ and U(VI).
