Abstract
This chapter describes the basics of package management, including Red Hat Packet Manager (RPM) and source code packages. It also describes complete installs of the packet capture (PCAP) libraries for Linux and windows systems, snort intrusion detection system (IDS) for Linux and Windows. It is important to keep snort installation up to date. This includes the PCAP libraries and the snort system itself. One should also visit the snort site frequently for updated rule sets. Computer security is a fast-paced sector, and it is necessary to keep on top of things so that the systems are not easily compromised.
