Abstract

Hepatic abscesses are relatively common in Western countries and are generally pyogenic and follow bacteremia. Amebic liver abscesses are more common in regions of the world where amebiasis is endemic. This chapter discusses the appropriate investigations, diagnosis, and management of these conditions. Hepatic cysts are frequently due to a noninfectious etiology, but in this chapter we focus on cysts secondary to echinococcal disease, including medical and surgical management.
