Abstract

For most subject liaison librarians, information literacy instruction forms a large part of their duties. For STEM librarians, ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education provides a flexible tool for designing and assessing information literacy programs in universities and colleges. Its six core concepts overlap with several science literacy standards. Academic librarians can utilize both the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and science literacy standards to develop educational programs that foster both information and science literacies. From tapping into to the power of science graphic novels to using improvisation to explain complex scientific research, this chapter contains six case studies that outline a variety of workshops, class sessions, and semester-long courses for students and faculty members in STEM and non-STEM disciplines. Hopefully, these case studies can serve as inspiration for other librarians to implement similar programs at their own institutions.
