Abstract

This chapter covers types of seeds and kinds of seed dormancy, and it includes dichotomous keys for each of them. The hierarchical classification system of seed dormancy has been expanded, and it now includes division, subdivision, class, subclass, level and type of dormancy. There are five classes of dormancy (physiological, morphological, morphophysiological, physical and combinational), and each is discussed in considerable detail, as well as Nikolaeva’s chemical and mechanical dormancies, which are included as a part of physiological dormancy. Also, a section is devoted to each level of physiological dormancy and to seed dormancy in palms.
