Abstract

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are recalcitrant compounds that contaminate soil, air and water. Due to bioaccumulation, they enter food chain and threaten human health and other life forms. Effects of PAHs on human health include cataract, weak immunity, damage of kidney, liver, breathing abnormalities, lung function abnormalities, skin, bladder, lung and gastrointestinal cancer, reproductive abnormalities, behavioural problems, low IQ and child asthma. PAHs have a dose-dependent impact on plant development and growth. Effect of PAHs on birds, reptiles, amphibians and other organisms depends on species and age of the organism. Thus exposure to PAHs leads to health and economic loss as they affect organisms of diverse ecosystem, human health, plant growth and development. In environment, PAHs can be degraded by various methods. However, biodegradation of PAHs is considered as the most favoured strategy to manage PAH pollution in the environment.
