Abstract

This chapter examines the role that food policy councils (FPCs) are playing in changing the landscape of urban agriculture (UA) in North America, Europe, and Australia. It begins with a brief overview of the concept and history of FPCs. It then describes methods used for a scoping review on the role of FPCs in supporting UA as well as the results and themes emerging from that review. Four key themes that emerged related to the role of FPCs in UA were: (1) Policies; (2) Education; (3) Markets; (4) Land access and use. In each of these areas, FPCs played instrumental roles in advocating for and advancing UA. We conclude with some directions for future action and research related to the role of FPCs in supporting UA.
