Abstract

Man-made fibers need spin finishes on their surfaces to facilitate the conversion of fiber to yarn, yarn to fabric, and textile materials for a variety of end-uses. Spin finish adds a film to the fiber surface that is only a few nanometers thick; however, it affects the fiber performance in different conversion processes in a multitude of ways. This chapter covers various components of spin finish required to finish different textile fibers, techniques of spin finish application, and assessment of spin finish presence on fiber surfaces. A number of online and offline testing methods and procedures are discussed herein.
