Abstract

Materials are essential for the development of the selective laser sintering (SLS) technology, which play a decisive role in forming speed and accuracy, mechanical properties, and applications of SLS. SLS technology has an outstanding advantage, using the power as the forming material, which is extensively applied. In theory, any powder materials in which interconnection can be formed between particles upon laser heating can be used as forming materials for SLS. At present, paraffin, polymer materials, ceramic powders, and precoated sand powder materials have been successfully used for sintering on the SLS system. Owing to various features of SLS, such as diversified materials, powder saving, forming of arbitrarily complex structural parts, and suitability for multiple purposes, SLS has received more and more extensive applications.
