Abstract

Publishing in scientific journals is perhaps the most important form of scientific communication. This chapter discusses topics that are central to journal publications. The first aspect is peer review and editorship. Each journal has an editor-in-chief and an editorial board. One of the editor’s main tasks is handling peer review. The chapter then discusses different review systems and editorial decision schemes, as well as related concepts like rejection rate and delays in the publication process. The second main aspect is open access (OA), the free availability of scientific publications. We explain the difference between Green and Gold OA, inherent problems such as the question of costs and predatory OA, as well as the debate on the effects of OA: Does it lead to a citation advantage? The third aspect is scientific misconduct, which includes plagiarism, fake reviews, and fraud. We close by explaining how misconduct may lead to retractions and irreproducibility.
