Abstract

Ignitable liquid products are derived from crude oil or are produced synthetically. Today, crude oil is still the main feedstock for engine and heating fuels and also an invaluable feedstock for the chemical industry. Many commonly used products, from plastics to pharmaceuticals, are based on crude oil, including many ignitable liquid products. Examples include primary petroleum distillates such as naphtha, kerosene, and gasoil and blended products such as gasoline. However, due to the imminent depletion of oil and the effect its usage has on the environment, research for alternatives is ongoing. This has led to the conversion of various carbon-based feedstock (coal, gas, biomass) into synthetic liquid fuels (XTL-fuels) and the direct use of biomass-based fuels such as bioethanol, biodiesel, and renewable diesel.
