Abstract

Publisher Summary GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) technology encompasses the disciplines of semiconductor materials and devices, microwave circuit design, and fields and waves. This chapter provides an overview of GaAs monolithic microwave technology, and describes the GaAs materials and device technologies that support the circuit technology, circuit design and fabrication techniques, examples of circuits that have been built, unresolved issues, and projections for evolution of the technology. GaAs MMIC technology's origin is based in GaAs materials and microwave device technology. The chapter discusses relative advantages and disadvantages of this technology compared to other microwave circuit technologies, and describes different types of MMIC circuits that can be built using the technology. It also highlights the fundamentals of GaAs microwave device technology. The chapter describes unique features of GaAs as a semiconductor material that make it particularly suited to fabrication of high-performance high-speed devices. It also discusses a few practical aspects of GaAs microwave device physics.
