Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, inflammatory, relapsing disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis are the two major types of IBD. Dietary factors are widely considered to be as potential triggering factors in development and/or inducing remission in IBD. Malnutrition is one of the common problems in patients with IBD, particularly with CD. Enteral nutrition may be considered as the first-line treatment option in active CD in children or as nutritional support way in adult patients. The dietary recommendation in IBD patients should be individualized. The specific dietary interventions such a slow FODMAPs diets, specific carbohydrate diets, diets high in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, and probiotic supplementation have some beneficial effects on induction of remission or maintenance. Further studies are needed to prove these effects in management of IBD.
