Abstract

The need for biofuels to meet the renewable fuel standards in different countries encourages the commercial production of renewable liquid transportation fuels such as biodiesel. Among fossil fuels, diesel is widely used in the transportation sector, further highlighting the significance of sustainable biodiesel production worldwide to replace this polluting fuel and mitigate the associated environmental challenges. Transesterification is the technique most widely used to produce biodiesel. Among the various elements affecting biodiesel production, oil feedstocks play an important role as they contribute around three-quarters of the overall production costs. Hence, the main objective of this chapter is to elaborate on various feedstocks for biodiesel production at various locations around the globe. Accordingly, this chapter is divided into six sections based on different continents. In each section, potential biodiesel feedstocks are identified in the respective continent, followed by an evaluation of their techno-economic feasibility and environmental viability for the commercial production of biodiesel.
