Abstract

Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/Cas-based genome editing (GE) has received extensive attention in recent times because of its high target precision, programmability, and extensive application in gene editing/mutation in plants. In addition, a wide range of new biotechnologies based on CRISPR/Cas GE platforms have extended the scope of basic plant science and synthetic biology. Herein, in this chapter, we review the application of the CRISPR/Cas GE system in plant improvements, particularly focused on the development of crops with improved quality and yield, and stress tolerance. We then discuss the biosafety and regulatory concerns associated with CRISPR/Cas-edited plants and their utilization. Finally, we discuss the future outlook related to further application and advancement of the CRISPR/Cas GE system.
