Abstract

This chapter presents an analysis of contingency tables using graphic displays based on the mixture index of fit. It presents a new approach for the visualization of structure in categorical data. According to this approach, a simple model is considered for defining the structure of interest. The chapter illustrates several methods that are used for the analysis of two-way contingency tables with an example of an occupational mobility data. This data cross-classifies the American men in 1962 according to their current occupation category and their fathers' occupation category. The approach presented is not limited to mobility or other two-way tables or to the models considered; it could be applied to any of the several models that are suggested for the analysis of the social mobility and related two-way tables. The methods presented in the chapter can also be generalized to higher dimensional contingency tables.
