Abstract

Although prevention of obesity is a global health priority, management of existing morbid obesity is being considered to be increasingly important. Current evidence suggests that bariatric surgery is the only intervention, which consistently achieves a sustained, life-changing weight reduction. There are large amount of data available now regarding the efficacy of bariatric surgery. It has become important to develop expertise in identifying eligible patients for bariatric surgery and prepare them carefully for the long-term lifestyle changes. There is robust evidence available now to show remission of type 2 diabetes following bariatric surgery, including few randomized controlled trials. The other comorbidities, such as obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and depression, are also shown to improve. As there are different bariatric procedures with variable characteristics available, it is vital that the patients are appropriately chosen for the suitable procedure. Bariatric surgery also has shown to improve the overall quality of life. Currently, with limited pharmacologic options available, bariatric surgery, along with appropriate lifestyle changes, takes a very important place in the management algorithm of both obesity and type 2 diabetes.
