Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter provides the solution available on Mathematica for difference or recurrence equations. The Rsolve command can solve all constant coefficient linear equations, many variable coefficient linear equations, and quite a few nonlinear equations. It can also solve many linear variable coefficient difference equations in which the coefficients are polynomial or rational. q-difference equations can also be solved using the Rsolve command. This chapter examines nonlinear equations by other means, discussing interesting features such as bifurcation, cycles, and chaos. It also considers some other discrete systems, namely fractals, Lindenmayer systems, and cellular automata. Examples are provided to illustrate how to solve difference equations, both of the linear and non-linear varieties, using different techniques. An analysis of the predator–prey model governed by the differential equations is also included.
