Abstract

A main challenge of Heterogeneous Wireless Networks (HWNs) is the Radio Resource Management (RRM) strategy. Currently, the RRM strategies are implemented in different kinds of networks separately. None of the RRM strategies is suitable for the heterogeneous network, because each RRM strategy only considers the situation of one particular Radio Access Technology (RAT). However, the heterogeneous network requires a more efficient RRM approach to coordinate radio resources among different RATs in an optimized way. HWNs provide an opportunity for developers to design efficient scheduling and Call Admission Control (CAC) mechanisms to fulfill strict QoS requirement for the different classes of traffic. RRM includes transmission power management, preventive and reactive congestion control, and scheduling of radio resources. A fundamental element in RRM is scheduling that arbitrates among packets that are ready for transmission. CAC schemes are also central elements for resource management with QoS support in wireless systems. This chapter will provide an investigation of several scheduling and CAC schemes for wireless systems. It reviews existing approaches and techniques for power management. It then presents some preventive congestion control schemes. Also in this chapter, different radio resource scheduling schemes are analyzed using simulation analysis in order to find out how to enhance bandwidth efficiency and throughput.
