Abstract

This chapter focuses on the computer-assisted instruction (CAI), which is a type of computer-based instruction that can be used alone or in conjunction with other instructional systems. CAI can be used to guide the instruction in simulators or it can be used as a component in a computer-managed instruction system. The amount of computer control over the complete instructional process varies with the application. CAI can be used as an ancillary part of an instructor's lesson, providing instruction on a small subset of the total material. At the other end of the spectrum, intelligent computer-assisted instruction (ICAI) can be used to control all aspects of the pedagogical interactions with little or no assistance from an instructor. Actual CAI-instructional material, called courseware, can take many forms. Courseware is the special purpose software that is authored by a subject matter expert or a computer programmer to provide the instructional interactions.
