Abstract

Dementia is a debilitating disease growing in prevalence as our population ages. Prevention or treatment of dementia, especially Alzheimer’s disease, is widely sought. Vitamin B supplementation, particularly B6, folate, and B12, are of interest in this regard. Vitamin B is inextricably linked to plasma homocysteine levels, which are known to play a role in cognitive decline. Vitamin B supplementation is often linked to lowering of total plasma homocysteine, and thus theorized to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Currently the evidence is far from conclusive in their use for treatment or prevention of dementia. This chapter will discuss the evidence available to date and seek to identify the role of these B vitamins in the treatment or prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and age-related cognitive decline.
