Abstract

Radiation treatment side effects generally fall into two categories: early and late side effects. Early side effects occur during and immediately after completion of radiation treatment, whereas late radiation side effects occur many months or years after completion of radiation treatment. It is the early radiation side effects that can cause significant difficulty for the patient to continue radiation treatment and may require a break from the treatment, compromising the treatment outcome. It is imperative that radiation oncologists learn how to treat the side effects of radiation to prevent such breaks in the treatment. It is also noteworthy that the concurrent treatment of chemotherapy with radiation worsens both early and late radiation side effects. This chapter will discuss the common radiation side effects and their management during the radiation therapy.
