Abstract

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in pregnant women can lead to severe fetal abnormalities and infants may be born with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). Neurogenic bladder (NB), a urinary dysfunction associated with neurological malfunction, is one the possible urological sequels. NB interferes with the physiological mechanism of micturition and causes a degree of urological dysfunctions, including urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections (UTI). This is a treatable condition but delay in diagnosis and treatment may cause progressive urinary system damage, advancing to chronic stages and renal failure. Between 2015 and 2019, a cohort of 90 CZS patients were investigated and NB was confirmed on 84 (93%). The majority presented overactive bladder with a reduced bladder capacity and compliance. Postvoid residual was also observed. Only six patients (5.4%) presented a normal urodynamic pattern. Urological assessment is recommended in all patients with congenital Zika syndrome to rule out NB.
