Abstract

This chapter provides information regarding potential approaches for assessing, managing, and mitigating risks associated with the deep geologic storage of CO2. Information is gathered from three principle sources—industrial analogs such as natural gas storage, deep injection of hazardous wastes and nuclear waste storage; natural analogs, especially those with CO2 leaks at the surface; and industrial uses of CO2 for a variety of applications. The chapter presents several recommendations in the areas of risk assessment framework and methodology, risk management approaches, and risk mitigation and remediation methods. A large amount of valuable information is obtained from investigating natural and industrial analogs for geologic storage of carbon dioxide. Recommendations for additional research to address gaps in knowledge and risk management approaches are also provided.
