Abstract

The largest and most complex organ of the body, the skin, has long been studied as a route for drug delivery for both local and systemic effects. Iontophoresis can be defined as the application of low-level current (≤0.50mA/cm2) to facilitate the permeation of both charged and neutral molecules across the skin. Iontophoretic drug delivery has wide applications in dermatological skin disorders such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and alopecia. Iontophoretic drug delivery is currently also being explored for transpapillary and suprachoroidal delivery of drugs.
