Abstract

Irrigation and maintenance are two of the key actions necessary for a good state and performance of a vertical greening system. Given their particular characteristics, these operations are not as simple as common greening infrastructures, especially due to their vertical condition. Depending on the kind of system used, irrigation can be performed in different ways. Green facades are usually watered at the base or in each plant box. In living walls, the network is more complex and usually involves several irrigation lines at different heights. The water holding capacity of the substrate used has to be taken into account. The placement of the diverse plant species must be done bearing in mind their water requirements as there will be a gradient of humidity along the living wall. The main handicaps for the maintenance of these systems are associated with working at a height. These operations involve fertilizing, pruning, pest and disease management, and weed control.
