Abstract

Physicians are poorly trained in balancing the demands of a career in medicine and maintaining personal health. Programs that address overall well-being early in residency are necessary to prevent physician burnout and promote physician health. In July 2015, the department of neurosurgery at the Medical University of South Carolina implemented a voluntary wellness initiative to promote healthy lifestyle choices. Baseline health and psychological screenings demonstrated alarmingly prevalent, previously undiagnosed abnormalities on cardiovascular and body weight screenings. Obstacles to leading a healthier lifestyle were identified and solutions were incorporated into the “La Sierra” program. In the first year of the program, average physical fitness metrics had improvement in every category and much had been learned about the psychological and physical impact of the program. Residency wellness programs are achievable and demonstrate significant benefit to the psyche and overall health. Programs such as these may be implemented to promote healthier lifestyles and combat physician burnout.
