Abstract

Under international cooperation, we implemented an on-site investigation and established disaster data archives regarding the storm surge caused by super Typhoon Haiyan that hit the Philippines in Nov. 2013. Both geographical and social factors are considered to have contributed to the tremendous damage caused. We clarify the relationship between the geography of coral reefs and characteristics of flood damage. We also examine what must be done to improve resilience in coastal lowlands of developing countries.
