Abstract

Favorable outcomes after mitral valve replacement have been reported using a variety of operative techniques. Here, the indications for mitral valve replacement are reviewed along with important considerations regarding mitral valve prosthesis selection. Emphasis is placed on three common operative techniques used for the surgical replacement of the mitral valve, including a partial (posterior) chordal preservation strategy, as well as total chordal preservation strategies using the Miki or David techniques. Common complications that occur in the early and late postoperative periods after mitral valve replacement are reviewed.
