Abstract
The motive of nanomaterials in the storage and packaging of agricultural products is to preserve the quality of agricultural commodities while targeting low-cost and green packaging systems. In general, nanomaterials are embedded into polymer matrices, and resulting polymer nanocomposites are used in packing applications. There are three main categories, namely, improved packaging, active packaging, and intelligent or smart packaging. In improved packaging, nanomaterials in a polymer matrix improve the mechanical properties and gas barrier characteristics. The active packaging incorporates active constituents such as antimicrobials, which increase the shelf-life, product quality, and safety of the food product. Intelligent packaging involves nanosensors where they can interact with internal and external environmental factors to sense the quality of the agricultural product through their unique chemical and electro-optical properties. Moreover, the ripening stage can also be monitored using sensors such as ethylene gas indicators, an intelligent packaging method. Nanosensors ensure that consumers purchase fresh and tasty agricultural products and reduce the frequency of food-borne illnesses. This chapter focuses on findings involving nanomaterials to improve the efficiency of packaging and storage of agricultural products.
