Abstract

Tubular membranes, mainly made of ceramics or polymers, have been widely used in microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), pervaporation (PV), and vapor permeation (VP). Different from plate, spiral wound, and hollow fiber membranes, tubular membranes have super high antifouling properties and are widely applied in treating highly polluted wastewater or viscose waste oil/water mixtures, etc. Ceramic membranes have better thermal and chemical stabilities to be applied in harsh operational conditions, while the much lower material cost and better toughness of polymeric tubular membranes enable them in many separation applications operated at relatively mild conditions. This chapter provides some fundamental knowledge of preparation, module design, and operational conditions of ceramic and polymeric tubular membranes. More information about tubular PV desalination membranes are introduced in concerns of the novelty and potential of this technology.
