Abstract

The chapter discusses the designers’ responsibility in delivering a safe design. It addresses the concepts of “inherently safe” and “intrinsically safe” designs and also the classification of plant areas based on potential hazards. The concept of “engineered safety” is elaborated and followed by its tools like trips and alarms, safety and pressure relief valves, blowdown and flare systems, and the HAZOP study procedure with an example.
