Abstract

Carbon dots (CDs) provide significant advantages of strong photoluminescence, good photostability, high water solubility, and outstanding biocompatibility, and thus are being widely exploited as potential imaging agents for in vitro cell imaging. This chapter reviews the development of CDs as fluorescent nanoprobes with different fluorescent colors for the potent applications on various target cell imaging, to highlight their prospective approach for superior cell imaging analysis. Advanced CD-based microscopic techniques are also thoroughly discussed to provide an overview of the current microscopic technological developments for the utilization in cell image. The combination of advanced microscopic techniques and fluorescent CD-based nanoprobes improves their feasibility in cell imaging applications, suggesting the CD-based microscopic techniques offer powerful tools for the biological and biomedical sciences.
