Abstract
The mangrove of the Niger Delta is one of the largest and most significant forests in Africa. It is one of the best carbon sequesters and pollution filters in the African subregion. Its commercial production as firewood is a major income earning activity for rural dwellers. In order to preserve its resources from destruction it is necessary to study it holistically using remote sensing and GIS technologies such as satellite images and drones. This will provide data that will identify the extent of degradation and loss. A previous study indicates that 5%–10% of the forests in the Niger Delta were lost due to deforestation and invasive species. The loss of mangroves forest and its resources in the Niger Delta in monetary terms is over $1 trillion dollars. Resources that will be lost if the mangroves go extinct includes timber, fire wood, wild life, fishery, tourism, medicinal herbs and building materials.
